Bedding Guide for a Good Night’s Sleep

If you woke up feeling groggy and grumpy, perhaps you are sleep-deprived or more so due to the lack of quality sleep. Studies show that a few factors could cause a lack of quality sleep, but one underlying reason could be an uncomfortable bed. By that, we meant the pillows, duvets and linens you sleep on after a long day at work.

Many often neglect the importance of picking out a suitable bedding set but trust us; it’s about time you make the change for a healthier body and soul this 2021. If you feel perplexed when you step into the bedding store, possibly the guide below could save you from being easily cheated into getting premium quality materials when suggested by the salesperson.

The most essential – Pillow

Pillows are vital in providing the optimum quality sleep, and selecting one depends on your sleeping position whilst considering any existing health conditions you may have. Ultimately, what is comfortable for one sleeper might not be comfortable for another, so do not merely dive into the one suggested by the salesperson. More importantly, purchase a pillow that can support the neck and upper back; well, you wouldn’t want to end up scouring for a Salonpass the minute you get up the next morning.

A good indication to replace your pillows is when it droops upon being placed over your arm. Otherwise, experts suggest changing them after 18 months of usage.

Type of pillows:

  • Feather pillows – The fluffiest of all pillows.
  • Down pillows – If you are into soft cushions that sink when you rest your head on, this is the one you should get. These pillows do not provide the best support for your neck, so its best to have a secondary pillow.
  • Memory foam pillows – They are known to last up to three years. Despite tossing and turning all night, the memory foam pillow self-adjust to prevent muscle strains to your neck, head and shoulder.
  • Microbead pillows – Like beanbags, these are practically more suited as a bolster than a head pillow.
  • Body pillows – It was introduced into the market to provide the extra lower back support for pregnant women. These U-shaped long pillows are great for hugging and snuggling up into the night. It’s no surprise even singles would get them, I mean we could use an extra cuddle too.

Choosing the right duvet

Before splurging on luxurious sheets, think about the most significant contributor to a good night’s rest; the duvet. Considering how Singapore could get humid at night, it’s essential to factor in the tog rating of a duvet – the measure of warmth to enjoy your beauty sleep at the optimum temperature, so to avoid needing to fan yourself in the middle of the night. Duvets are available in various materials but bear in mind your budget and health conditions before making your purchase.

Types of duvets:

  • Hollowfibre duvets: The most affordable of all duvets, machine washable and some are hypoallergic. Downside: Filling might clump up together over time and lose their tog rating pretty quickly.
  • Feather and down duvets: They can retain heat which prevents your body from overheating at night. Downside: Slightly more pricey than hollow fibre and advisable to get it professionally cleaned as they can lose their filling quickly.
  • Silk duvets: Keeps you warm whilst moderating the body heat. Also, a natural resistant to allergens, making it ideal for anyone with health conditions such as eczema and asthma.
  • Microfibre duvets: These are one of the newest addition to the duvet family. Especially if you don’t fancy bulky duvets, this lightweight duvet suits you best. Downside: Doesn’t regulate heat so, at times, you might feel a little stuffy or find yourself shivering in an airconditioned room.

Bed Linens

Bed linens or many know it as bedsheets are what makes the base of the entire bed. More often than not, when one thinks of a new bedding change, bedsheets come to mind first. It’s quite a chore picking out sheets suited to your bedroom’s design or colour; above all, choosing the right fabric makes it even more complicated. The question is, is cotton the only fabric option? It’s about time we spill the tea on the other materials and get you well-rested for a new day.

Types of Bedsheet fabric:

Cotton: The most common material of all time, for its breathable and soft fabric, making you feel like you are on cloud nine. Also considered to be the most affordable, cotton also comes in various types.

  • Cotton Jersey: If you are a fan of cotton tees, this fabric is your ultimate go-to. Downside: If you tend to sweat during the night, this linen might cause staining and traps heat, causing it to smell a little musky if not Febreezed/washed often.
  • Upland cotton: The most common type of cotton used in bedsheets and mass-sold in stores at a bargained price. Downside: Shorter fibres thus do not put your hopes high on sleeping in soft linens.

Tencel: It is a fabric made from a eucalyptus tree’s wood pulp and produced using the least amount of water and chemicals than cotton; thus, environmental enthusiasts, this is a must-buy for you. With its microbial material, no wonder its deemed to be one of the more pricey bedlinens.

Silk: If you are one who loves sleeping in silk pyjamas, this could match it up. Silk undoubtedly can get pretty costly, but if you are looking into getting the utmost luxury, this tops the charts.

Polyester: It fabricates out of polymers similar to that of plastic bottles, its raw material could come off as stiff, and itchy to touch; thus, cotton often diffusers into the polymers during production. Despite it being super breathable, it’s inadvisable to anyone who easily sweats as it might come off as stuffy.
