7 Cleaning Tips for a Healthier Home

With our homes now doubling as workspaces, maintaining a clean living environment has never been more important.

Good health for you and your family starts with where you live. By minimizing exposure to potential health hazards within your home, you create a safe space to recharge from everyday stress.

Even better, you don’t need to put in a lot of effort to make your home healthier to live in.

All it takes is to put a few simple tips into practice.

7 home cleaning tips for healthier living

1. Leave no carpet unturned

Left uncleaned, carpets can be breeding grounds for bacteria and pests.

Carpets add a nice touch to any home, but neglect their care and they become a serious health risk.

That’s because carpets have a tendency to trap a lot of dust and debris. Not only do these wear down your carpet over time, they also trigger allergies more often.

In Singapore’s consistently warm and humid climate, carpets also become perfect environments for fungi, dust mites and bacteria to thrive in. Prolonged exposure to dust mites can trigger severe allergic reactions or even lead to skin disorders like eczema.

If you’ve a pet at home, you should also be paying more attention to your carpets. Pet dander and hair can get trapped in carpets, and sensitive noses won’t take too kindly to either.

2. Never leave trash overnight

Never leave overnight trash at home.

If you habitually bag your trash and leave them idle overnight in the kitchen, you might want to change that.

Overnight trash at home is an open invitation for all sorts of pests – ants, cockroaches and rats – to invade your home.

Worse, decomposing waste in your trash might even spill onto the floor, creating a space for harmful bacteria to rapidly breed.

The foul stench produced by the waste also reduces air quality at home (your neighbours are certainly going to cry foul too).

Always dispose of trash regularly before bedtime. If you don’t have the time or energy to do so, you should at least place it in a bin with a securely covered lid.

3. Keep your home 100% clutter – free

It’s no secret that your living space affects your thoughts and emotions. A clear, minimalist environment tends to calm and aid concentration, while a cluttered space provokes anxiety instead.

If you’re working from home, maintaining a clutter-free home can do wonders for your productivity. If you don’t have time to completely declutter your home, you should at least keep your workspace as distraction-free as possible.

4. Get rid of stagnant water

Dengue fever is at an all-time high in Singapore, and keeping yourself and your family dengue-free starts by denying those pesky mosquitoes a space to breed.

To do that, always pour stagnant water away. Common sources of stagnant water can include:

  • Flowerpots
  • Vases
  • Kitchen dish racks
  • Bamboo pole holders
  • Roof gutter
  • Drains within your home compound

You should also check for any leakages that may cause stagnant water to build up over time.

5. Watch out for high-touch areas

Last but not least, you should also pay more attention to spots in your home that you and your family have a high frequency of contact with.

High-touch areas in your home typically include:

  • Doorbell
  • Doorknobs
  • Light switches
  • Fridge handles
  • Kitchen sink
  • Stove knobs
  • TV remote

Be sure to frequently clean high-touch areas by first wiping them down with soap and water and then applying disinfectant. It’s highly recommended to wear gloves when doing so.
